The SIG SAUER M17 won the Modular Handgun System (MHS) contract for the U.S. Army following one of the most stringent and fiercely contested review procedures in military firearms history. The M17 platform, which is based on the P320, was chosen because of its unparalleled capability, unwavering performance, and distinctively inventive adaptability. The  standards of the U.S. Army are closely matched by the P320.

Being selected as the U.S. Army’s choice with the M17 was a true honor for SIG SAUER. Tom Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President of SIG SAUER, Inc., stated that civilian interest in the weapon was instantaneous at the announcement of the selection. “We are pleased to introduce the P320 to the market in response to the strong demand from civilians to possess the handgun used by the Army and other U.S. military branches.”

One (1) 17-round magazine and two (2) 21-round magazines are included with the 9mm striker-fired P320. Like the pistols currently being shipped to the U.S. Army, it has black controls and a coyote-tan PVD-coated stainless steel slide with the same optic cut as required by the MHS contract. It also has a SIGLITE front night sight and a detachable Night Sight rear plate. A manual safety is standard on the P320, which has a three-size coyote-tan carry-length grip module. There are also non-manual-safety models (320F-9).
